Packing

Packing is an art form.  It consists of a carefully selected set of ingredients or in this case equipment, clothing, health supplies, and snacks.  However, it looks like a mess, completely disorganized and scattered throughout the room.

However, with a little bit of sorting and weeding out unnecessary or redundant items it is neatly packaged and we are ready to go.


We grabbed an Uber and off we went to the San Francisco Airport.  We used Clear to get through the airport without waiting for any lines and the next thing you know we were boarding the plane.

One of the many things we are keeping track of on this trek is the altitude.  Remember the reading on this watch at SFO - it is only 35.  We are almost at sea level.  Later in our postings, a few weeks  from now, we will make a comparison and as we will be hiking up 17,000 feet.

Mt. Everest - An Introduction The journey begins now, even though the formal expedition is in September (all of September). Many of you have been asking me about the trip, the equipment, and the preparation. Mt. Everest - Meds

Meds We made sure we were up on all of immunizations.  Unfortunately, we had to have another tetanus shot, but other than that not too bad on the shots. (Of course, David was all caught up, so no shots for him - not totally fair - but the humor or irony of us having to get shots and not him, was not lost on him.) Meds - An Overview (click above) Typhoid Vaccine (Vivotif Berna) In any case, we are entering some serious terrain, where we might run into contaminated food or water. So we are all getting our typhoid vaccine. There are two kinds of vaccines to prevent typhoid.  One is a shot (with inactivated vaccine).  The other typhoid vaccine is taken orally and lasts a lot longer (if you take a booster in 6 months it can last almost forever).  You can guess which one we opted for - yes - the oral vaccine. Mt. Everest: The Last Day of the Trek (day 11)

Mt. Everest: The last day of our trek Namche Bazaar to Lukla September 22, 2018 We thought for some reason the return trip would be easy.   All downhill right?   No way.   It was miles and miles (or kilometers in this case) of trekking up steep stone, dried up, river beds and then down again on slippery rocks and leaves.   The kids who live up there can glide on top of these stones like gazelles.   We looked more like little old ladies; (well, except David who could keep up with Giri our guide with no discernable difficulty). We woke up at 6:00, had some breakfast and we were off and running (ok trekking) by 7:15.   We made it from Namche Bazaar to Lukla – our final destination - in one day.    Going up would (or I should say did) take double that time.   Parenthetically, Lukla is one of the most dangerous airports in the world (see YouTube).   We will be taking that flight tomorrow morning around 6 am to get...
