Mt. Everest - We Made It to Kathmandu
Kathmandu - First Day and Night
After 30 hours of flying from San Francisco to Singapore to Bangkok, we made it to Kathmandu. It feels good. The Yatri Hotel is nice, clean, and has a great set of beds for us to sack out and we did - at least until it was time for dinner.
Driving to dinner was an experience, cars honking nonstop to get by - sometimes even coming right at you. The motorcycle and pedestrian crowds just go where they want to go. Often it is a contest of wills as one car comes towards another and the only signaling as I say is the horn.
Once we arrived for dinner, we had a splendid meal, served with style - pouring the rice wine and the water from about 3 or 4 feet high (from the table). The performance was an authentic Nepalise dance. They explained that the food and the dance have strong Indian and Chinese influences.
The food and service were wonderful, warm, and welcoming but we were exhausted and almost feel asleep in our chairs. (David did fall asleep. He was totally exhausted,)
We ended the evening with a series of additional dances and some yogurt for dessert. Tomorrow we will explore a bit more of Kathmandu (but more awake) and the following day the trek really begins.
It is Father's Day over here today - not a bad way to spend it thats for sure.
